How to prepare for your promo video shoot
Preparing for a short promotional shoot can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are a few tips that will help equip you to rock the shoot!
Short promos should tell a story
Think of short promotional shoots as the ability to share a short story with someone who wants to learn and grow.
Plan your short introduction.
I find this to be similar to an "elevator pitch" because you don't have much time to introduce yourself and to make memorable impact.
You may want to start with an interesting question or statement before saying your name.
Instead of saying: "Hi, my name is ___ and I have an interesting course about connecting with your audience. Let me tell you about it..."
Try: "What would you do if you could inspire your audience in a profound and authentic way? My name is ___ ... etc "
How you speak in everyday situations should be similar to how you speak on camera. Don't try to incorporate fancy words you don't normally use. People will respond to you if you are authentic and REAL! Don’t feel pressure to look like an expert. All you need to do is share what you already know. So, talk like a normal person. Speak in complete sentences and take your time. Collect your thoughts and talk at a normal pace.
Understand that your interview will be edited
If you stutter, stagger or pause for a really long time, continue on. The footage we use will be edited, so you don't have to get the whole sentence exactly right. Most times, we can edit out large breaks with "B-Roll" footage which means we cut to a different video while your voice is used over the top of it, so, we can edit out the stutter, stagger and long pauses. The magic of editing means you can be free to make mistakes (sometimes, mistakes are the best takes!)
Simplify your attire
Try not to wear anything with stipes or intricate patterns. This can sometimes cause a strange pattern to display in the footage. Aside from that, rock whatever outfit you want to wear.
Check your surroundings
Make sure the area where filming will occur is not messy. If you need to, tidy up.
Eat, drink and sleep well
Make sure, your tummy is not grumbling, and you have had enough water throughout the day. Your mouth can get dry really quickly. You will need to be on your game on the day so, please make sure you get enough rest.
